Is there milk in your juice?

Recently, I vented a bit on twitter about Naked and Odwalla’s switch to whey (milk-derived) protein.  Unfortunately, in my rage from taking a big gulp of whey protein, I tweeted that ALL Naked and Odwalla products now have dairy protein.  Sorry about that. However, there are now very few if any protein drinks from these companies that are vegan.

It turned out a lot of vegans didn’t know about the switch.  I happened to notice this with Odwalla drinks when I bought a bottle a few months back.  I started drinking it and something didn’t taste right.  I remembered, in my nonvegan days, taking whey protein supplements and this immediately came to mind.

I looked at the bottle and saw a cartoon drawing of a cow.  Frantically turning over the bottle, there it was, “whey.”  They not only added it, but touted it as a feature on the front label.

I think I’m like most vegans (real vegans) in that I read my ingredients before I consume something.  However, I usually don’t re-read them *every time* I purchase it.  I expect cliff bars always to be vegan, for instance.  I mistakenly made this same assumption about Naked and Odwalla drinks.  I was already aware of the inclusion of whey in Bolthouse farms’ drinks.

I recently emailed these companies about their beverages and will post their responses here and on twitter (@abvegan) when available.  For now, I just wanted to give my readers a heads up, careful with Naked, Odwalla, and Bolthouse farms juices—especially protein mixes.

If you are looking for a drinkable protein mix, I highly recommend Vega.  I’ll have an article up later on Vega protein powders, but for the time being, you can find more information at myvega.com.  And no, I’m not paid by anyone for saying this.
